Steps
1
Measure the width of the door from one side to the other at the base.
Tip: Ensure the measurement is exact to avoid gaps at the ends.
2
Cut the door sweep to the measured length using a hacksaw or utility knife.
Tip: Cut on the outside of your mark to ensure a snug fit.
3
Hold the sweep against the bottom of the door to check the fit and alignment.
Tip: Adjust the position so it clears the floor but closes the gap.
4
Mark the screw hole locations on the door using a pencil.
Tip: Align the sweep centered on the door width.
5
Pre-drill small pilot holes at the marked locations to prevent the wood from splitting.
Tip: Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the mounting screws.
6
Align the sweep and drive the screws through the pre-drilled holes into the door.
Tip: Tighten screws firmly but avoid over-driving them into the wood.
7
Test the operation by opening and closing the door several times.
Tip: Check that the sweep glides smoothly across the threshold.
8
Adjust the sweep if it is rubbing too hard against the floor or leaving a gap.
Tip: Some adjustable sweeps allow you to slide the rubber seal up or down.
Pro Tips
Ensure the bottom of the door is clean and dry before installation for a better seal.
